Artistic Director Biography

Rachel Cleland

The Milton Choristers are extremely excited to have Rachel Cleland as our new Artistic Director for the Choristers' 49th Season, 2017-18. She will bring an energetic joyfulness to choral practice every week and a passion for igniting the joy of singing.

In addition to her new role with the Choristers, Rachel will continue into her 6th Season as the Music Director and Conductor of the Guelph Community Singers.

Rachel the Soprano has a voice that has been hailed as 'full, florid, and astonishing' and her performances praised as 'resplendent' and 'visceral'. Her recent seasons have included lead roles in opera works by Wagner, Verdi and Mozart and singing for the third time Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra.

After studying choral conducting in University, Rachel began working with various church and children's choirs such as the We Are One Jazz project (approx. 400 children) and the Dixon Grove Glee Choir, a pilot inner-city project featuring both song and dance.

Upon moving to Cambridge, she began a children's choir class and an adult choir at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts. She then became the Conductor of the Woman to Woman choir and the Hamilton Children's choir Kindersing program.

Though a natural on stage, Rachel is equally passionate about music education and performance coaching. Rachel has taught with the Canadian Opera Company, Centauri Summer Arts, Queen's University (Belfast), York University (Ontario), the BYP Music Festival (Kilkeel) and in independent studios. Rachel was able to share her excitement and love of music with children experiencing poverty over her 10 years teaching with DARE Arts.
